All About Laptop Repair

Which is better.. Keyboard or Piano?

Real pianos are great but the one big drawback is you can’t turn the volume down so with a piano you tend to end up playing for the neighbours. With a keyboard you can stick on some headphones and play whatever turns you on – you can experiment, make mistakes and sound silly and play something a thousand times without driving other people nuts.

Ideally – have BOTH!

If you are buying a piano it is preferable to buy an overstrung piano not a straight strung! How to tell: Lift the top lid of the piano you should see the tuning pins at the top of the piano. If the tuning pins are evenly spaced along the pin block and the strings are all parallel and vertical this is a straight strung piano. If there is a group of tuning pins at the left and a separate group at the right and the strings cross over in a X shape this is an overstrung piano. Also get a tuner to check it out. I bought a piano once that needed to have the wood treated because all the pins (that tighten the strings) were coming loose very quickly after being tuned – disaster!

What Keyboard should you choose?

A lot depends on what you want. Do you want a keyboard that sounds and feels like a Piano – then you’re looking for a keyboard or Digital Piano with WEIGHTED keys. Listen carefully to the piano sound – don’t be bamboozled by all the other buttons. If you want something portable then you are looking for a keyboard. Personally I would still look for one with weighted keys – I hate the feel of light plastic keys.

Get a keyboard with at least 61 keys – anything less and you will be craving for more keys after a few days. Also make sure get a sustain pedal, a keyboard is absloutely a dead thing without one. Without a sustain pedal as soon as you lift your finger off a key the sound stops dead – with a piano at least the strings vibrate for a second or two – the difference is quite noticeable.

Netflix testing pre-roll trailers just like you get at the movies

In its never-ending quest to try and serve up content you might like, Netflix is experimenting with showing users pre-roll trailers for its own shows and movies before whatever it is you've queued up - so you get previews of other attractions just like you do in a real movie theater.

Spotted by Reddit users and reported at Cord Cutters News, the "previews" last 30 seconds and can be fast forwarded if you want to get to the action that you actually selected for your viewing pleasure.

As is often the case with new Netflix features, this is only being tested with a small group of users for the time being, and there's no guarantee yet that it'll ever make the grade and roll out to everyone. Still. it's an interesting glimpse into Netflix's thinking on how it might promote its own original shows some more.

Here we go again

Those of you with relatively long memories might remember that Netflix tried something similar a couple of years ago. That time the trailers were met with a negative reaction from users who didn't appreciate advertising on a service they'd already paid for, even if it was only for other Netflix shows.

Now, the pre-roll trailer could be back. According to the people who've seen the previews, they're showing up on the Netflix website and on dedicated devices like Roku players. They're also picked based on your previous viewing habits.

"We're experimenting with video based on personalized recommendations for shows and movies on the service or coming shortly," Netflix said in a statement. "If we don't test, we won't learn and we'll never get better, and who wants that?"

This Startup Wants To Track Your Smartphone — To Improve Your Mental Health

When star neuroscientist Thomas Insel left Verily, Alphabet’s life sciences division, last month, he joined a tiny startup called Mindstrong Health. Its mission overlaps with the project he’d led at Verily: Use the world’s smartphones to diagnose, track, and treat mental health disorders.

But while Mindstrong has just 14 employees, compared to Verily’s 500 employees and its hundreds of millions of dollars in funding, the startup’s executives say they aren’t worried about their competition. Over the last two and a half years, they say, they’ve already quietly completed a handful of clinical trials that show promise in their patented technology. Last week, they teamed up with a pharmaceutical company that’s developing treatments for neurobehavioral disorders. And on Thursday, they announced that they’ve raised $14 million.

“I’m not worried” about Google, Mindstrong's CEO and cofounder Paul Dagum told BuzzFeed News. “It takes time collecting this data, getting people enrolled. You can’t take a 2.5-year study and make it three months. It’s gotta be 2.5 years. We feel like we’re very much ahead of the game at this point.”

Based in Palo Alto, California, Mindstrong is building an app based on the emerging concept in psychiatry of “digital phenotyping.” Currently, the onus is largely on you, the patient, to seek out a therapist or doctor, and self-report your feelings and moods. But smartphones, with which patients are constantly interacting, could be a more thorough, objective source of data about the state of their minds. Could be: There’s a lot of noise in all that data, and patients would have to give the company deep access to their phones.

Mindstrong hasn’t yet published results from its clinical trials, which tested its technology in people with age-related neurodegeneration, depression, and anxiety. Other similar startups, such as Ginger.io, have previously tried using smartphone data to infer behavioral patterns and mental health problems, only to change course (in Ginger.io’s case to a text and video-chat therapy model).
